Essentials Explained : Getting Rid of e-Waste

In this second of our ‘Essentials Explained’ series, we explore how e-waste is currently disposed of, what happens to it afterwards, plus various initiatives and strategies aimed at reducing the ever-increasing pile of discarded electronics.

What Is E-Waste? 

Electronic waste (e-waste) refers to any electronic device that has reached the end of its useful life and is discarded. This can include everything from obsolete computers, servers and mobile phones to outdated office equipment like printers, photocopiers and even light bulbs.

The improper disposal of e-waste poses severe environmental and health risks. Many electronic devices contain toxic substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium which can leach into the soil and water, causing long-term environmental damage. Also, when e-waste is burned or improperly handled, harmful chemicals can be released into the air, posing a threat to human health.

The sheer volume of e-waste (combined with its hazardous nature) underscores the importance of proper disposal methods and the need for businesses to take proactive steps in managing their electronic waste.

How Much E-Waste Is There? 

With the relentless pace of technological advancement, global e-waste generation continues to grow at an alarming rate. In 2023, the world produced approximately 63.3 million tonnes of e-waste. This actually represents a slight increase from the 62 million tonnes generated in 2022. This trend indicates that e-waste is increasing by about 2.6 million tonnes annually and it is projected to reach around 82 million tonnes by 2030!

The UK alone produces approximately 24.9kg of e-waste per person each year, which is significantly higher than the European Union average.

How UK Businesses Can Dispose of E-Waste 

Understanding and managing e-waste is not just an environmental responsibility but also an opportunity to enhance sustainability credentials and ensure compliance with regulations.

Currently, e-waste can be disposed of in several ways, but the most common methods include recycling, landfill, and informal disposal.

In the UK, however, businesses are legally required to dispose of their e-waste in a manner that complies with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations. Here’s how this process typically happens:

Assessment and Collection 

Businesses first need to assess their electronic waste to determine whether it can be refurbished or if it should be recycled. Items that are still functional can be donated, sold, or refurbished.

For items that need to be disposed of, businesses can arrange for collection by authorised waste carriers. Many IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) companies offer services that include secure data destruction, collection, and responsible recycling of e-waste.

Examples of well-known IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) companies include:

– Sims Lifecycle Services (SLS) – One of the largest ITAD providers globally, with significant operations in the UK.

– Restore Technology – Part of the Restore Group and a leading UK ITAD company offering a full suite of services for IT asset disposal.

– Stone Group – A UK-based ITAD provider that focuses on providing sustainable IT asset management solutions.

– Tier 1 – A UK-based ITAD company with a strong reputation for providing secure and compliant IT asset disposal services.

These are just a selection of some of the bigger names – there are, of course, many more ITAD companies for businesses to choose from.

Data Destruction 

Before any disposal, however, it is crucial for businesses to ensure that all data on electronic devices is securely erased to prevent data breaches. This is often done by ITAD companies that specialise in secure data destruction, providing certification for the process.

Recycling 

Collected e-waste is then transported to authorised recycling facilities. These facilities are equipped to safely dismantle electronics, recovering valuable materials such as metals and plastics. The WEEE Regulations require businesses to ensure that their e-waste is sent to facilities that meet environmental standards.

Some e-waste is exported for recycling under strict regulatory controls, though this is less common due to concerns about environmental and health impacts in destination countries.

Documentation and Compliance 

In the UK, businesses are legally required to dispose of e-waste through authorised channels under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. This directive ensures that e-waste is properly collected, treated, and recycled, thereby reducing the amount that ends up in landfills.

This means that UK businesses must maintain records of their e-waste disposal to demonstrate compliance with WEEE regulations. This includes documenting the amount and type of e-waste, the method of disposal, and the recycling outcomes. These records are crucial for regulatory audits and to ensure legal compliance. However, compliance can be complex, and as such, many businesses may still be inadvertently contributing to the problem through improper disposal practices.

Reuse and Refurbishment 

An increasing number of businesses opt to refurbish and reuse electronic equipment instead of disposing of it. This not only reduces waste but also cuts costs and supports sustainability goals. Reused and refurbished equipment is often sold or donated, extending the lifecycle of electronic devices. Examples of UK companies offering refurbishment include:

– Envirofone. This UK company focuses on the refurbishment of mobile phones and tablets. They purchase old or unwanted devices, refurbish them to ensure they are in good working condition, and resell them to consumers.

– The Phone Co-op. Part of the Midcounties Co-operative, it offers refurbished mobile phones as part of its sustainability initiatives.

– Techbuyer. A global leader in the refurbishment and resale of data centre equipment, including servers, storage, and networking devices, Techbuyer purchase used IT hardware, refurbish it (to a high standard), and then sell it with warranties.

These are just a few examples, there are many more – the point is that by following these (compliant) steps, UK businesses can manage their e-waste responsibly, thereby minimising environmental impact and ensuring compliance with national regulations

Recycling 

Recycling is the most environmentally responsible option, allowing for the recovery of valuable materials such as gold, silver, and copper. These materials can then be reused in the production of new electronic devices, reducing the need for mining, and conserving natural resources. For example, it’s estimated that one million mobile phones can yield 35,274 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, and 75 pounds of gold!

Only 20 Per Cent Is Recycled 

Unfortunately, despite the potential benefits of recycling, only about 20 per cent of global e-waste is formally recycled. The rest often ends up in landfills or is sent to developing countries where it is informally recycled. This informal recycling often involves dangerous practices, such as burning circuit boards to extract metals, which expose workers to toxic fumes and result in severe environmental pollution.

What Happens to E-Waste After Disposal? 

Once e-waste is disposed of, its journey depends largely on how it has been processed. In cases where e-waste is correctly recycled, it is typically collected by waste management companies that specialise in electronic waste. These companies sort, dismantle, and process the waste to recover valuable materials. Metals like gold, silver, and copper are extracted and sold back into the market, while other components, such as plastics and glass, are recycled for use in other products.

However, not all e-waste is managed so responsibly. E-waste that ends up in landfills can leach harmful chemicals into the environment, contaminating soil and water supplies. Furthermore, e-waste sent to developing countries for informal recycling often results in significant environmental and health risks due to unsafe processing practices, as mentioned.

The Circular Economy 

On the other hand, e-waste that is properly recycled can play a vital role in creating a circular economy. By reintroducing valuable materials back into the production cycle, businesses can help reduce the demand for new resources, minimise environmental impact, and support sustainable development. For example, initiatives like the Royal Mint’s partnership with Excir, a Canadian start-up, aim to recover precious metals from e-waste, demonstrating how innovative approaches can turn waste into valuable resources.

Initiatives and Strategies to Reduce E-Waste 

The growing e-waste crisis has prompted a variety of initiatives and strategies aimed at reducing the amount of electronic waste generated and improving its disposal. These include:

– Government and regulatory initiatives. In the UK, the WEEE Directive has been instrumental in shaping how businesses handle e-waste. This legislation mandates that producers and importers of electronic goods are responsible for financing the collection, treatment, and recycling of e-waste. Also, the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan promotes sustainable product design and resource efficiency, aiming to reduce waste generation and enhance recycling efforts across the continent.

– Corporate responsibility and business Initiatives. Businesses are increasingly recognising the importance of responsible e-waste management, not only as a regulatory requirement but also as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes. As mentioned earlier, many companies now partner with IT asset disposition (ITAD) services, which specialise in the secure and environmentally friendly disposal of electronic assets. These services ensure that e-waste is handled in a way that maximises value recovery and minimises environmental impact.

– Technological and industry innovations. Technological advancements are also playing a crucial role in reducing e-waste. For instance, the Royal Mint’s innovative approach to recovering gold from circuit boards is just one example of how technology can help tackle the e-waste problem. Other innovations include the development of ‘device-as-a-service’ models, which encourage businesses to lease rather than purchase electronic devices, thereby reducing the need for frequent upgrades and disposals.

– Consumer and employee engagement. Engaging both consumers and employees in e-waste reduction efforts is essential. Businesses can run awareness campaigns to educate their staff about the importance of proper e-waste disposal and encourage responsible practices, such as returning old devices for recycling. Also, promoting the use of refurbished or second-hand electronics can help reduce the overall demand for new devices, thereby decreasing e-waste generation.

Looking Ahead – The Future of E-Waste Management 

The future of e-waste management is likely to be shaped by a combination of regulatory pressures, technological innovations, and a growing awareness of the environmental impact of electronic waste.

The ‘right to repair’ movement, for instance, is gaining traction and could significantly extend the lifecycle of electronic devices, reducing the need for frequent replacements and cutting down on e-waste. For example, in 2021, Apple launched its Self-Service Repair program and expanded its Independent Repair Provider (IRP) program globally.

Also, as the circular economy concept becomes more mainstream, businesses will increasingly be expected to adopt practices that minimise waste and maximise resource efficiency.  As sustainability becomes a critical factor in business operations, companies that proactively address e-waste management will be better positioned to meet regulatory requirements, reduce costs, and enhance their reputation.

Sustainability-in-Tech : How Cheese Helped Extract Gold From E-Waste

ETH Zurich researchers have reported discovering an effective method for recovering gold from e-waste with the help of byproducts from the cheesemaking process.

Protein Fibre Sponge 

The group of researchers, led by ETH Professor Mezzenga, have reported using a sponge made from a protein matrix (a cheesemaking byproduct) to extract gold from e-waste.

The protein matrix/protein fibre sponge was made by denaturing whey proteins under acidic conditions and high temperatures, thereby aggregating them into protein nanofibrils in a gel. The gel was then dried to create the protein fibre sponge.

The Process 

To test the protein fibre sponge, the research team salvaged 20 old computer motherboards and extracted the metal parts. They then dissolved the parts in an acid bath to ionise the metals. The protein fibre sponge was then placed in the metal ion solution and the gold ions adhered to the protein fibres.

The final part of the process was to heat the sponge, thereby reducing the gold ions into flakes. These flakes were then melted down to form a gold nugget.

How Much Gold?

The researchers reported making a nugget of around 450 milligrams out of the 20 computer motherboards using this process. The nugget was reported to be 91 percent gold (the remainder being copper), which corresponds to 22 carats.

Not Just Gold 

Despite being particularly effective at extracting gold ions, the researchers reported that the process can also be used to extract other metal ions.

How Much Gold In E-Waste? 

It’s estimated that 7 per cent of the world’s gold may be currently locked-away in e-waste and that there is 100 times more gold in a tonne of e-waste than in a tonne of gold ore! Also, for every 1 million mobile phone handsets that are recycled, an estimated 35,274 lbs of copper, 772 lbs of silver, 75 lbs of gold, and 33 lbs of palladium can be recovered.

What Does This Mean For Your Business?

The growing pile of e-waste, the fact that in global terms only 20 per cent of e-waste is formally recycled, and that so much of the world’s gold (7 per cent), and other precious metals are locked up in e-waste are huge challenges. This ingenious method for gold recovery developed by the ETH Zurich researchers which uses a cheesemaking byproduct is, therefore, very promising in terms of sustainability.

The fact that it’s also reported to be a cost-effective method (and, therefore commercially viable) is a bonus that could see it being made ready for the market soon. Another benefit of this method is its flexibility, making it useful for extracting gold from industrial waste from microchip manufacturing or from gold-plating processes. It’s understood that the scientists are also eyeing the possibility of manufacturing the protein fibre sponges out of other protein-rich byproducts or waste products from the food industry, thereby potentially widening the scope and perhaps reducing the cost of the process even more.

Although apparently effective, it should be remembered that tackling the world’s e-waste problem needs a much wider approach. For example, creating a circular economy for electronic goods where waste is minimised, resources are maximised, the environment and health are protected, while businesses and developing economies can still meet their demand, would all help. However, there’s still quite a way to go before this can happen.

Some of the actions that could help bring these necessary changes about could include more legislation and having a more digital and connected world to help accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals. This could possibly be achieved through ‘device-as-a-service’ business models, better product tracking and take-back schemes, plus entrepreneurs, investors, academics, business leaders and lawmakers working together helping create a circular economy that really works.

The e-waste challenge is significant, but as the ETH Zurich researchers have shown, innovative yet relatively simple solutions exist and could have a major impact if scaled up.

Sustainability-in-Tech : Austria’s Tech Gadget Repair Scheme

Austria’s Repair Bonus voucher scheme sees the government pay citizens up to €200 (£173) towards getting old electrical appliances, devices and tech gadgets fixed.

Why?  

The Austrian government scheme, financed through the Covid Recovery Fund, is designed to motivate people to repair rather than throw away old electrical appliances (and add to a growing pile of e-waste). Austria’s Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler launched the scheme with the intention of “making repair attractive again.” 

The E-Waste Problem 

A 2019 UN report showed that the world produces as much as 50 million tonnes annually of electronic and electrical waste, also known as e-waste, but that only 20 per cent of this is formally recycled. Put in context, the current worldwide pile of electronic waste weighs more than all the commercial airliners ever made. The UK, for example, currently produces 24.9kg of e-waste per person, which is nearly 10kg more than the European Union (EU) average.

Some of the main problems associated with e-waste are:

– Environmental pollution. E-waste contains harmful toxins like Lead, Mercury, Cadmium (and others), posing significant health and environmental risks.

– Loss of valuable materials. E-waste is a source of scarce and valuable materials such as gold and platinum, which are often lost due to improper disposal.

– The current recycling rates are too low. Only about 20 per cent of e-waste is formally recycled worldwide, leading to environmental harm and material loss.

– Health risks in informal recycling. In countries with a predominantly informal e-waste sector, such as India, workers face severe health risks due to exposure to dangerous chemicals.

– Asset wastage. Companies often prematurely dispose of electronic assets, resulting in the loss of potentially useful resources.

– Data security concerns. Fears over data security leads some companies to destroy electronic assets rather than recycle or reuse them.

– E-waste export to developing countries. Despite the Basel Convention’s limitations, developed countries have been exporting a significant portion of their e-waste to developing countries, contributing to improper recycling practices. However, the upcoming “Swiss-Ghana Amendments” to the Basel Convention, effective from 2025, aim to redefine the trade rules for hazardous and non-hazardous e-waste, potentially reducing this issue.

– Cheap electrical goods preventing recycling. For example, if the costs of repairing an electrical item / device are more than 20-30 per cent of the cost of the new product, people are more likely to buy new and not repair the old item. The Repair Bonus scheme may, therefore, be a way to lower those costs, and act as an incentive to repair more.

Which Items Does The Austrian Repair Scheme Apply To? 

Austria’s Repair Bonus voucher scheme applies to almost all electrical and electronic equipment commonly used in private households, including those with a power cord, rechargeable battery, and battery or solar modules.

How Does The Scheme Work? 

The scheme works by issuing vouchers that can be redeemed at third party partner companies who carry out the repairs. The customer downloads the voucher from the government website, pays the partner company upfront, and then receives a direct payment (into their bank account) of half the costs of the repair back after three to four weeks.

A Win-Win 

The scheme is being described as a win-win because customers benefit from cost savings on the repair, local businesses (the partner repair businesses) benefit from additional revenues, and the environment benefits from a reduction in the amount of e-waste.

Challenges 

Although the Austrian scheme has led to more repairs it hasn’t been without its challenges. For example:

– There is a shortage of technicians and craftspeople to carry out the repairs.

– Some of the spare parts needed for some repairs are no longer available, so replacements need to be found.

– The scheme needs to work well enough to change quite an entrenched mindset in what has become a ‘throwaway society.’

What Else Could Encourage Repair and Recycling? 

In addition to voucher schemes, like the one in Austria, other measures that could encourage the repair and recycling of electrical goods and a circular and more sustainable economy could include:

– Educational campaigns, i.e. increasing public awareness about the environmental and economic benefits of repairing and recycling electronics and educating consumers about their rights to repair their own devices or to have them repaired by a third party.

– Extended producer responsibility (EPR), i.e. implementing policies requiring manufacturers to take back used products for recycling or proper disposal.

– Repair-friendly design regulations. Encouraging or mandating manufacturers to design products that are easier to repair and upgrade.

– Tax breaks or incentives for companies and consumers who repair, recycle, or buy refurbished electronics.

– Community repair events such as organising local repair cafes or workshops / pop-up workshops where people can bring their electronics for free or low-cost repairs.

– Providing financial and technical support to small businesses specialising in repairing electronics.

– Recycling infrastructure development. Investing in more accessible and efficient recycling facilities and collection points.

– More laws and regulations for waste reduction including enforcing stricter regulations on electronic waste disposal and promoting recycling.

Is There A Similar Scheme In The UK? 

Unfortunately, here in the UK, there isn’t a direct counterpart to Austria’s Repair Bonus voucher scheme for electrical devices. However, the UK government did introduce new ‘Right to Repair’ laws in 2021, and has initiated a consultation to enhance electrical waste recycling, making it easier for people to recycle through manufacturer and retailer responsibility. Also, The Restart Project advocates for the Right to Repair and promotes repair and reuse through various initiatives and community activities.

What Does This Mean For Your Organisation? 

Austria’s Repair Bonus voucher scheme could represent one way to move forward in addressing the escalating global problem of e-waste and promoting a more sustainable approach to technology usage and the use of all household appliances and gadgets. For organisations, this kind of initiative is not just about environmental stewardship but also presents an opportunity for economic and societal benefits.

The scheme does appear to provide a win-win in terms of providing cost savings to consumers, boosting local businesses, and reducing the volume of e-waste making the option of fixing old devices more attractive compared to buying new ones.

However, the Austrian scheme does face challenges, particularly in the areas of technical workforce and spare parts availability. Finding a way to ensure a steady supply of skilled technicians through training and education programs may be essential going forward. Also, making spare parts more accessible, possibly through collaborations with manufacturers, might be a way to ensure that more repairs are feasible and cost-effective.

If similar initiatives are adopted in many other countries too, this could have a positive impact on global e-waste reduction and tailoring these programs to suit specific national contexts could maximise their effectiveness. Also, incentivising businesses (who are large buyers of electrical devices) to engage more actively in repair and recycling efforts could be achieved through a variety of measures, such as tax incentives, subsidies, or recognition programs.

In terms of environmental impact, such initiatives could contribute to the conservation of valuable resources and reduce the need for extracting new raw materials. From an economic standpoint, developing a robust repair industry could also open up new job opportunities and foster local economies. Promoting repair and recycling also aligns with the broader goals of sustainability and responsible consumption.

The apparent success of Austria’s Repair Bonus scheme, therefore, offers valuable insights and food for thought into how similar strategies could be implemented globally. For organisations, embracing these principles could mean not only contributing to environmental sustainability but also potentially tapping into new economic opportunities. As awareness of the e-waste challenge grows, initiatives like these could provide a roadmap for responsible electronic waste management and a more sustainable future.
